Black lace tattoo on a thigh
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The left panel shows a tall, vertical design of black lace-like flowers and scrolling foliage running down the outer side of a leg, with black fabric visible at the top. The two right panels are close-ups showing fine black linework, delicate mesh-like shading and open floral petals on pale skin. The tattoo is entirely black ink, arranged in a framed collage.

The bobbins were still clicking when the bell at St Oswin's struck two, and Hester Vane would not light the lamp until the last pin was set. She sat by the open window with the canal sliding black below, her fingers moving over the pillow by feel alone. Her eyes had gone the winter before, so the pattern lived in her hands now: a flower, a curl of vine, a flower again, running down the length of fine thread a merchant's wife had ordered for her daughter's wedding.

The order was for a veil of three yards, and it had to be done before the spring fair. Each night she worked a little more, and each morning the boy from the lodging house up the lane came for the finished bobbins and left a loaf on the step. He never took money for the bread. His grandmother had worn a veil from this same parish, and Hester had mended it for nothing when the hem came undone. On the ninth night the boy brought word that the wedding was off. The bridegroom had gone to sea, and the merchant's wife had no use for lace at all.
Hester finished the veil anyway, because a pattern half-done sits badly in the hands. On the last night she pricked the final leaf by candlelight and saw, for the first time, what the open flowers really were. It was not the thread that made the picture. It was the holes between the threads, the places where nothing had been made at all. She folded the veil into tissue and carried it down to the canal steps, where the boy was waiting with his barrow.
Morning came up grey over the roofs. A woman in a plain coat bought the veil for a shilling and wore it across the bridge, and the lace caught the light the way water does. People turned to look at it and could never agree on what they had seen. Back at the window, Hester lit the lamp at last, and for once it was enough to see by.
