The fern comes off the Marguerite in a crate that smells of wet sacking and diesel, and by the time the crane sets it down on the quay the sacking has rotted to lace. You sign for it because your uncle's hands have gone too unsteady for pen work, and the dockmaster wants a name against the consignment before the tide turns. Nobody on the quay knows what the thing is. The label says only Cellar Stock, Do Not Expose.

When you lever the lid off in the glasshouse above the fish market, the fronds are so dark they look scorched, every leaf a black lobe with a pale line of bare wood running through its middle. Your uncle, who can name any plant by its smell, takes one look and says a fern grown in the dark learns to keep its stems light, so the sun can find them. Then he counts the small pale dots set into each leaf, one, two, three, and shuffles off to bed without saying what he expected to find.

You plant it in the corner where the glass is cracked. For a month nothing happens except the gulls getting into the bins. Then, on a grey morning with the harbour full of masts, a new frond unrolls against the pane, black as the ink in the ledger you have been filling in, its stem running straight up the glass like a line drawn with a ruler. By August the dots on every leaf have opened like small grey eyes, and you stop pretending you were only minding the crate.
