Four thin black lines around a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Four thin, evenly spaced black lines encircle the forearm near the elbow, running in parallel bands from one side of the arm to the other. The linework is crisp and uniform, with no shading, and the ink is solid black against pale skin. The arm is raised across the frame, with a rolled plaid shirt sleeve and a soft, neutral background behind it.

Sit closer to the fire, the wood is green and it will only warm you for the length of one sentence. No, the brother who ruled the lines was not the abbot. Brother Osric had the steadiest hand in the scriptorium at Hallow Wythe, and the four lines he drew across every leaf were the only straight things in that whole cold valley.

The winter the river froze, the copying stopped, because the ink froze in its pots and the calfskin cracked when you breathed on it. Osric sat by the one brazier with the last sheet and his bone ruler. Brother Tobin, who talked more than he prayed, asked him why he bothered with four lines when three would serve the psalter well enough. Osric said the first line was for the saints, the second for the living, and the third for the dead. The fourth he would not explain, and he drew it anyway, pressing so lightly the lead barely marked the vellum.
That fourth line was for the boy who came up the pass in January with a sack of wet letters and no family left to claim him. Nobody asked him to stay. Osric set him to grinding galls and carrying water, and in the evenings he taught him to rule a page. The boy never spoke much, but he learned the lines faster than anyone.
When the thaw came, the boy had gone down the valley with the first barge, and the bridge was gone with the flood. Osric said nothing about it at matins. But when the brothers opened the great book that spring, they found the last page ruled with four careful lines, and in the gap beneath the fourth, in pale ink, a name nobody had written down.
