Large bat tattoo wrapping a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A large bat with outstretched wings covers the forearm and runs up onto the upper arm of a person wearing a black top and light blue trousers. The bat's head and body are shaded with soft grey gradients, while the wing membranes are rendered in dark ink with fine bone lines and subtle shading. The photograph is taken indoors against a plain wall and a wooden floor, with the subject's face out of frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lorry driver had been arguing with the barrier for ten minutes when the bat came off the gantry and hung itself above booth four, wings spread wide across the lamp as if someone had pinned a dark sheet there. Nobody else noticed. I had worked nights at the Scarth Fell Crossing for eleven years, and the only things that ever came through unannounced were moths and the occasional drunk.

The car that reached my window was small and dusty, with a woman at the wheel and a boy asleep against the door, a torch still clenched in his fist. She handed over her passport and a folded letter in a language I only half knew. "My grandfather's," she said. "He wrote that the bats on the far side come over from the quarry every dusk and never once ask permission." I checked the letter's date against the stamp. Everything matched except the seal, which was a pressed wing in red wax.

I should have asked her to pull into the bay. Instead I looked up. The bat had dropped lower, folding its wings tight the way they do when they have decided something, and it hung for a moment over the dashboard, close enough that the boy stirred and murmured about the dark. Then it unfolded and slid out through the gap above the barrier, its long fingers catching the sodium light, and crossed the fence line in one stroke.

I stamped the passport and handed it back. She thanked me, and the barrier rose. In the mirror the wings kept going over the quarry, dark against the orange glow of the far town, until I could no longer tell which side of the wire they belonged to.
