A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The sketchbook turned up on a Thursday, wedged behind the radiator on platform four, and nobody ever claimed it. I kept it in the cupboard under the lost property counter at Ashby Junction, between a single wellington boot and a tin of travel sweets gone soft in the damp. The first page held a face: one long line for the jaw, two dashes for eyes, and a scribble of hair that ran off the paper as if it had somewhere better to be.

I was the one who drew the people on platform four. Every morning while the 7.42 idled, I sat on the cold bench with a pencil and sketched whoever stood alone at the far end of the shelter: a man balancing a bag of oranges, a girl folding and refolding her bus pass. Mostly I drew them with their backs to me. Faces I saved for when they turned round, and most of them never did.

Then one Thursday I opened the book and found a second line beneath the first face, in careful capitals I did not remember writing: THEY ALWAYS TURN ROUND IN THE END.

I closed the book and put it back behind the sweets. Outside, the 7.42 pulled away with its doors shut, and for the first time in years I did not pick up the pencil.
