Heart with arrow and Wild Heart text on chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A small outlined heart is pierced by an arrow, with the words WILD HEART in thin capital letters set beneath it. The linework is delicate and uniform, and the tattoo is in black ink with no shading. It sits at the centre of the chest, framed by an open light-wash denim jacket with the rest of the torso partly visible.

Dell had been painting the Quiet Wells motel sign for nineteen years, and every time the wind off the salt flats took a letter, she came back with a ladder and a tin of enamel. This morning the W was gone entirely, leaving ELCOME hanging over the forecourt like an apology. She stood in the heat with her brush between her teeth and counted the cracks in the board.

The boy who had driven the grain truck through the night was asleep on the bench beneath the dead palm, his boots stuck out into the road. He had asked her for a word that morning, just one, spelled out in capitals on a scrap of cardboard. She had told him she did not do words for free. He had laughed and said he would pay in petrol. Nobody paid in petrol anymore, but she had liked him for trying.
She climbed the ladder and painted the new W slowly, thick and square, then sat back on the rung. Below the big letters she dipped the finest sable she owned and wrote something small, in thin capitals she had learned from a lettering man in Tucson when she was young: WILD HEART. Beneath it, because her hand wanted to, she drew a little arrow through a heart in one unbroken line.
When the boy woke, the sun had moved and the sign was catching it. He read the words aloud, slowly, and asked what they meant. Dell wiped her brush on her apron and told him the truth, which was that she had no idea, only that the road out past the flats was long and somebody ought to say it out loud. He tipped his hat, and the arrow pointed him east.
