A vertical ornamental design drawn in black outline on a white background. Long, flowing curves wind around a cluster of interlocking circles and small hooked curls at the centre and ends. The linework is uniform and clean with no shading, and the image is entirely monochrome.

The hall still smells of floor polish, and Mr Pryce's name is chalked on the board by the fire door, which tells you somebody has kept the place up. Gemma pushes through the buffet queue holding a plastic wallet, and inside it is your old Geography exercise book, its cover gone soft as cloth. You don't need to open it. You know the margins. Page after page of the same figure: long looping strokes that never quite close, two rings knotted through each other, and at the end of every line a tight hook curling back on itself like a question that gave up halfway.

"He kept confiscating them," Gemma says. "Said you'd drawn the Andes as wallpaper."

You turn to the last page. Inside the innermost ring, in pencil so faint you have to tilt it to the light, someone has written a time and a place: Friday, half four, by the gate. The handwriting is yours, but you have no memory of writing it, and the date is the Friday before the school shut its doors for good, the week you were supposed to wait and nobody came.

Outside, the car park is full of people hunting for their own cars and their own names. The iron gate is still there, the one the council couldn't sell, its scrolls curling just like the page. Half four comes and goes on your watch. You stand with your hands in your coat until a figure detaches from the group by the bins, older than you remember and walking slower, and stops on the other side of the bars, holding a book of its own.
