Dotwork mandala on a thigh
Dotwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A large mandala tattoo fills the front of a thigh, built from radiating petals, concentric rings and fine dots. The design is rendered in stippled dotwork with some solid black linework and shading that gives it depth. The tattoo is centred in the frame, with black shorts and dark socks at the edges and a textured pale wall behind.

Dear Marnie, you were right about the sports hall. It still smells of floor polish, and someone had hung the same crepe paper streamers we made for the Year Eleven leavers' do, now gone the colour of weak tea. Mr Holroyd was there with his camera, asking everyone to stand still, and I thought of you saying he'd photograph us into the next century.

I wanted to show you something I couldn't carry to the reunion. Last spring I sat for most of a Saturday while Tomasz, who works above the launderette on Carter Street, pricked a mandala onto my thigh one dot at a time. There is no line to it, really. It is all stipple, thousands of small black points that look like frost until you stand back. When he lost his place he counted aloud in Polish, and when he reached the outer petals he said he had stopped being sure of the number around thirty thousand.
You'll remember Miss Ashdown making us draw circles with a pair of compasses, and how the point always left a neat hole in the paper where the work began. Tomasz started in the same place, at the very centre, and it was the only spot he went over twice because I asked him to. I suppose that is why the rings still look like they're turning when I shift my weight in bed. Write back and tell me what you're doing with the house. Don't say the garden, I already know about the garden.
Love, Jen
