Black mandala tattoo on an upper arm

Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black mandala with radiating petal and geometric detail sits on the upper arm, shown in crisp ink with bold shapes and fine inner linework. A second dark tattoo is partly visible on the thigh at the left edge of the frame. The photo is in colour with a warm, bright background, and the subject is cropped below the neck so no face is shown.

Dear Ada,

The Morning Star has been becalmed three days south of the Azores, and I have spent them at the chart table with the dividers and a bottle of India ink, redrawing the compass rose because Captain Pryce says the old one has gone soft at the edges. I set the point in the centre of the sheet and swung the circle, then swung it again, until the lines fanned out like the petals of the flower you pressed into Father's Bible. Sixteen points, then thirty-two, then a little star inside each one for the wind's smaller moods.

Mr Haskett, the mate, watched me over his pipe and said a navigator ought to draw straight lines and leave the flowers to the ladies. I told him the circle was the only honest thing on a chart, since every bearing on earth comes round to where you started. He laughed, though I think he was thinking of his wife in Plymouth.

Last night the wind came up from the north-east and the sea went the colour of wet slate. I stood the watch with the lamp turned low and the new rose spread across the table under a brass weight. Every line pointed somewhere we could not yet see. I found myself wishing I had drawn it bigger, so you could have stood inside it and seen which way home lay.

We raise Falmouth on Thursday, God willing. Keep the kettle on.

Your loving brother, Tom
