White geometric hand and wrist design
Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop of a person's hand and wrist, with white geometric patterns of lines, dots and diamond shapes across the back of the hand, fingers and wrist. The designs appear to be in a light white ink or possibly white henna-style body art, so they may be temporary rather than a permanent tattoo. The image is mostly neutral with blue denim and white lace shorts beside the hand, and the photograph is warm and softly focused.

Brother Osric had the lime ink ground so fine it would barely sit on the page, and he sent me up to the scriptorium loft to find the dry white pigment before Vespers. I found it in a tin beside the chalk, along with a dozen leaves of vellum already ruled with a bone point. The abbot wanted a pattern book for the new cloister roof: diamonds, dots and running lines that repeated like a shepherd counting his flock. Osric had drawn the first sheet himself, and nobody else was allowed to touch it.

He taught me that a pattern must be counted, not drawn. You start with a single dot at the knuckle, then lay the diamonds across the back of the hand, then run the thin lines down toward the fingers until they stop where the bone changes direction. Dots first, always, he said, because a dot cannot be wrong. When I asked why we bothered with skin when we had vellum, he only tapped the table and said the hand remembers what the eye forgets.
In Lent the fever took him, and the abbot gave me the last sheet to finish. I worked by one candle for six nights, counting under my breath until the lines came out even. On the seventh morning the rain came in sideways through the shutters and washed a corner of the page to grey, and I stood there with the ink running down my wrist.
At Compline I drew the pattern again on my own hand with what remained in the tin, dot and diamond and line, counting aloud the way he had. The brothers at the cloister door saw only a pale stain that caught the lamplight. By morning the rain had taken it, but my fingers still knew the count.
