Black mandala on upper arm

Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A seated person in a white bralette, denim shorts and a straw hat shows a large black mandala tattoo on the upper arm, with fine radiating lines and dense filled sections. A darker tattoo is partly visible on the thigh, but its design is cropped and not clear. The photo is warmly lit against a blue and white striped lounger, and the tattoos are the main focus of the composition.

Brother Ambrose had the compass before I did, and by the time the abbot gave me the chapter-house commission its brass points were worn bright in the middle, where a hundred years of hands had pressed. I was to draw the rose for the east window in ink, forty rings of it, each ring a band of dense black where the glass would be leaded dark and the light would come through only in the thin lines between. Brother Ambrose said the trick was to start at the centre and never look at the edge until the edge was owed to you.

I worked through Lent at the trestle by the scriptorium door, with marsh mist sliding under the sill and the bell for Nones coming across the water a breath late. Each radiating line had to meet its partner exactly, or the whole wheel lost its turn. Twice I ruined a sheet by hurrying the fourth quarter. The third time, Brother Ambrose set his thumb on my wrist, not unkindly, and told me the lines were not the point. The spaces between them were where the prayers went.

On the feast of the Annunciation the abbot came to see it. He stood a long while, then asked why I had left the very centre empty, a small pale disc no bigger than a barleycorn. I had no good answer. The compass point had gone clean through the vellum there, and I had not wanted to close the hole.

He nodded as though I had confessed something. The rose went up in the spring, dark and fine as a fingerprint against the morning. Every evening since, when the light goes off the marsh, I stand beneath it and look for that one pale point at its heart, which is the only part of the window that is entirely mine.
