Script lettering tattoo on the hand and wrist

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close crop of a woman's torso and raised hand, with the face out of frame. The back of the hand and wrist carry black ink script lettering with a small cross above, and a fine line tattoo is visible on the forearm. The ink is solid black with no colour, and the warm skin tones and sandy background are the main colours in the photo.

The sea had taken the R off the pier sign again, so Nell was up the ladder before the gulls finished arguing over the chip paper. Mr Pell handed her the sable brush without looking up. 'Backwards on the glass, girl, or the words won't read from the street.' She laid the letters out in her head first, the way he'd taught her, and then in her hand, which was steadier than her temper.

The kiosk at the lighthouse end was for the Gallagher sisters, who had sold tea from that hut since the war and wanted their name spelt properly this time. Nell painted SINGLE CUP, TWO SUGAR in neat black capitals, and then, in smaller gilt beneath, the name of the boy who had asked her to walk the breakwater on Sunday. Pell saw it and said nothing, which from him was a blessing.

Sunday came in grey and wrong. The boy never turned up, and the sisters found the gilt line with a knife and a damp cloth before lunch. Nell scraped the rest off herself, letter by letter, and wrote the tea prices again in plain black, a hand that could be read from the far end of the prom.

She kept the brush wrapped in oiled paper after that. When people asked what she did for a living, she said she wrote the things other people had to stand in front of. The last job of the season was a notice for the lost dogs of Marine Parade, and she signed it at the bottom, small, where only the one who had to read it would ever look.
