Black mandala tattoo on shoulder
Blackwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A large mandala with a symmetrical, layered floral pattern sits over the shoulder and upper chest. It is built from bold black outlines with solid black petal shapes and fine dotted and hatched detail, leaving lighter skin showing between sections. Small Roman numerals sit above the design near the neck, and a grey top is worn below.

Nell had been pricking the same rosette onto card for three nights when her father came down the stairs with the lamp turned low. 'It won't come right,' she said, not looking up. 'Twenty-eight petals, and the eighth keeps falling into the ring.' He set the lamp by her elbow, and it threw the pattern up at them both, black lines on the pale pillow, every petal a spoke of the same wheel.

He picked up the card and turned it, the way he turned the faces of the clocks he mended in the shop below, looking for the place where the works had slipped. 'You're counting from the outside,' he said. 'Count from the middle. The middle is always the first thing you make and the last thing anyone sees.'
She did as he said. Working inward from the dotted ring at the heart, she found the rhythm of it: the solid petals, the hatched shadow between them, the small bright gaps where the thread was left open so the light could get through. By the time the church clock struck two, the rosette sat true on the card, symmetrical as a face in a mirror, with XXVIII pricked neatly in the margin.
The bride collected her collar on the Saturday. She did not ask what the numbers meant, only that the lace be finished before the wedding, and Nell watched her turn it in the window and smile at the reflection. That night Nell pinned a spare rosette inside her drawer, and she left its eighth petal open on purpose, so the light had somewhere to fall.
