Mandala tattoo on a shoulder
Dotwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A large mandala design covers the shoulder, with radiating petals, diamond shapes and a central rosette built from fine linework and stippled dots. Shading in grey gives the petals depth, and the outer edge ends in a row of dots. The photograph is taken from behind, showing the shoulder against a plain wall and a maroon top.

The snow had sealed the pass by the second day, so the innkeeper at Hollin Fold laid out every bowl she owned along the long table and counted her guests twice. Seven of them, plus a boy who would not say where he had come from. Nobody pressed him. The stove ate peat and the wind worried at the shutters.

On the third night the boy asked for a needle and a pot of ink made from soot and sheep fat, then sat by the hearth drawing circles on the back of an old tithe notice. Each circle held another inside it, petals of one ring tucked beneath the points of the next, until the paper looked like frost growing on a window. Old Agathe, who had kept the inn before her, watched over her knitting and said nothing, because she knew a pattern when she saw one.
On the fourth morning the snow stopped and the boy was gone, but the drawing lay on the table, weighted by a salt cellar. At its heart sat a rosette no wider than a thumbnail, and around its outer edge ran a ring of dots so fine the innkeeper's eyes watered trying to count them. Agathe said they were the stars he had steered by, which was nonsense, but the dots marked exactly where the snow had stopped falling.
The innkeeper folded the paper into her apron pocket and went out with a shovel to open the road. Every drift she cut through showed the same delicate edge of ice along the stone wall, petal after petal, as if the valley had learned the pattern and meant to keep it.
