Black mandala tattoo on a shoulder
Dotwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A large black mandala with a radial floral pattern covers the shoulder and upper chest, with small dots scattered around its outer edge. The design is built from fine lines and dense dotwork in black ink, with lighter skin showing between the petals. The close crop shows the neck, shoulder and upper chest against a dark background, with a dark top covering the body below.

You prick the pattern before you ever touch a bobbin. Your grandmother's pricking card has gone soft at the corners, and the dots run in rings from the centre outward, each one a pin's width from the last. The veil must leave Honiton on the early post, and the dots are the only part of the design you trust yet.

The wedding is on Saturday, at a chapel in Sidmouth where the bride's mother will not stop fussing over the flowers. She wants lace across the shoulder of the gown, one round motif like a sun opening, petal folded inside petal. You work by lamplight, crossing pairs of bobbins, the clatter of them like a clock nobody has wound in years. Every time you lift a pin, the pattern holds or it doesn't.
Near midnight the thread snaps at the eighth ring. You sit with it a long while. Then you tie a reef knot, fish the dropped pin out with tweezers and find the broken strand has left a gap no bigger than a seed. You leave it. Anyone who looks closely will see one petal sitting a fraction wrong near the centre, and you decide it can stay.
On Saturday the bride turns in the chapel light, the ring of lace throws its small shadows across the pews, and nobody counts the dots but you.
