Mandala and crescent moon on a shoulder
Geometric · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink mandala sits inside a crescent moon, surrounded by an outlined star with pointed rays and small dots at the points. The mandala uses fine, detailed linework and dotwork shading, while the outer star is drawn in thinner single lines. The design is shown in black ink on pale skin, centred on the shoulder blade with the upper back and a dark fabric top visible around it.

Sit closer, the lot of you, the fire only warms those who lean in. Brother Anselm was the copyist at Saint Odo's, up where the mule track gives out in the snow, and he had a hand so steady the novices swore he held his breath while he drew. Every winter the abbot brought him the same order: make the wheel for the feast book, the one with the sun that is not a sun.

Anselm never began at the edge. He pricked the centre first, then drew his circles outward with a ruler of worn bone, filling each ring with tiny dots until it looked like frost on a window. Around the heart he set his star, eight rays sharp as a winter dawn, and at every point he placed one black dot, like a nail driven into a board. When he came to the moon, he laid a crescent over the wheel and left its hollow empty, a pale bed of parchment nobody had touched.
The abbot came down with a lamp one night and found the book open on the lectern. He stood a long while and asked why the moon was bare when the rest was so crowded. Anselm said the eye needs somewhere to rest when it has walked all those rings, and an empty place is the only kind it can find its way back to. The abbot grunted and went off to bed.
In spring the book was carried down to the valley, and years later a girl with ink on her fingers turned its pages in the market square. She stopped at the wheel, set her thumb in the empty crescent, and kept it there as though the moon might be warm.
