Black mandala tattoo on upper back
Blackwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large circular mandala sits centred on the upper back of a woman with her dark hair tied in a loose bun. The design uses dense black linework and solid black areas with fine ornamental detail, with petal and leaf shapes radiating from a central rosette. The image is in black and grey, with the untattooed skin showing through the pattern, and the tattoo fills most of the frame.

The lens has to be wiped twice before the light goes on, once for the salt and once for the fingerprints you were told not to leave. Mr Ashdown taught you to start at the centre, where the small rosette of prisms catches the lamp, and then work outward through the petals of glass until the whole thing hums faintly under the cloth like a struck bowl. You did it wrong the first week, rubbing in circles that smeared the light into a grey halo, and he simply took the cloth from your hand and showed you again.

He kept the light on Scarth Head for thirty-one years. He used to say the lens was a flower that only opened after dark, and he would not let you climb the gallery stairs without your gloves on. In February the fog came in off the Skerries so thick that the foghorn sounded like a cow lost in a cupboard, and the two of you sat up three nights running, turning the clockwork and counting the petals aloud to keep from dozing.
When he went ashore for his hip, he left his logbook on the kitchen table. Every night for three decades there was a small drawing in the margin, a ring with petals inked around its middle, and each one had a different number of leaves. The last page had the rosette sketched carefully and one petal left empty. You sat with the pencil for an hour before you filled it in, then climbed the tower and polished the glass from the centre out, slowly, as he had taught you. At dawn the sun came through the panes and laid a ring of gold across the whitewashed wall, and you stood inside it until the light went out.
