Lotus flower on upper back
Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A detailed lotus flower sits centrally on the upper back, with layered, pointed petals built from fine lines and stippled shading. Short dotted lines extend above and below the flower, framing it vertically. The tattoo is rendered only in black and grey ink on pale skin, and the flower fills the centre of an otherwise plain back.

Every morning before the mist lifted, Ada climbed the broken stair of the gatehouse to count the lilies in the moat. Nine last week, eleven yesterday. The castle had been roofless since her grandfather's time, its chapel open to the sky, and the moat had silted into a green bowl where nobody swam any more. Only the lilies kept coming back, closed tight in the dark water, opening with the sun like someone deciding to be seen.

The estate agent's man wanted the stone gone. He carried a survey clipboard and a dislike of nettles, and he said the walls would fall on somebody's child within a decade. Ada agreed with him about the walls. She did not agree about the lilies, which had no interest in property lines, and she told him so in the chapel, where a row of small holes still ran along the floor where the pews had been bolted down.
The drainage men came on a Tuesday with pegs and orange tape. Ada waited until they had gone to the pub, then walked the causeway in her boots and pulled every peg from the mud. She stacked them on the gatehouse step, one above the other, and sat with her back against the warm stone. Below her the lilies had spread across the whole moat, pale hands laid flat on black glass.
By evening the rain came in small, precise dots, pricking the water into rings that crossed and widened until the surface shivered. In the middle, one bloom unfolded its petals, slow and unhurried, and Ada counted it with her thumb against her knee, the way she had counted everything she meant to keep.
