Roses and mandala on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The design shows two detailed roses framing a central geometric mandala built from radiating petals, diamonds and scalloped rings. The linework is bold and clean, with stippled dotwork shading in the centre and solid black fills in the petals and gaps. The tattoo is shown in black ink and grey tones only, filling the forearm in a symmetrical composition against a plain white wall.

Ines had until Thursday to finish the shawl pattern, and Mr Hallam wanted two roses at its corners and nothing in the middle but a clean white star. She sat under the north window with squared paper pinned flat and a pencil worn to a stub, and every time she drew a petal it came out as a petal, which was the trouble. Roses were easy. A rose wanted to be looked at. The centre had to be something you could walk into.

On Wednesday night the lamp guttered, and she took the pricking needle from the drawer where her father kept his awl. She laid a fresh sheet over the grid and began at the exact middle, punching one hole, then another, then a ring of eight, then sixteen, each spaced by a rule she had cut from a tea tin. The holes made no lines. They only let the light through in a fine grey mist, the way frost sits on a field before anyone has crossed it.
By two in the morning the petals had radiated outward in diamonds and scalloped rings, each edge sharp enough to snag a thread. She inked the gaps where the paper needed weight and left the centre pale with its pinpricks, so that held to the window it looked like a small dark sun seen through rain.
Mr Hallam came at eight, lifted the sheet, and turned it over twice. He asked what the dots were for. Ines said nothing, which was the truest answer she had given him in a year, and she watched him hold the paper toward the glass until the pinholes caught the morning and the whole star lit up grey on the table between them.
