Black optical swirl on an upper arm

Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a large abstract swirl made of bold black curved bands that narrow and bend toward a central point, creating an optical, three-dimensional illusion. The lines are solid and clean, with negative skin gaps between the stripes that give strong contrast. The design fills most of the upper arm against a plain pale background, with a red garment and a white cloth at the edges of the frame.

Come closer, come closer, and mind the whirl, because the whirl minds you. That's the Tunnel of Ribbons, ladies and gentlemen, and Hector Quayle built it himself in the winter of nineteen thirty-one, out of black tar paper and a barrel of hoop iron he won off a Blackpool scrapman for two shillings and a promise. Look at it turn. Look at the stripes bending in on the middle like they're trying to tell you a secret and the secret is you're going down.

Now my sister Doreen, God rest her, she used to stand where you're standing and she'd say the trick was never the spinning. The trick was the gaps. Between every black band there's a sliver of white where the paint didn't go, and your eye lives in those gaps, see, it can't help itself. So Hector painted the gaps wider and the bands thinner each night until the whole thing looked like a thumbprint pulled through a keyhole. Doreen went in on a Thursday to fetch the spare lamp and she came out Saturday, very calm, and asked for her tea with two sugars.

So you tell me, sir, when you step through that flap and the stripes start to lean, do you keep your eyes on the far lights or do you let them take you round to the middle? Most people let them. Most people come out the other side with a little twist in their walk, like they've been dancing slow with someone they didn't quite catch the name of. Two pence to walk in. Pay the lad at the flap. Mind your hat.
