Wavy black lines on a forearm

Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo covers a band across the forearm and is made of bold, wavy black lines that run parallel to one another. Within the band, the lines bend into a whorled, fingerprint-like shape. The tattoo is entirely black ink with no colour, and the photograph is taken straight on against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You are nine the winter the seam at Harrow Bank starts to talk, and your uncle Tom says the only way to hear it is to press your palm flat to the coal face and wait. The lines in the coal run in long waves, one above another, the way the sea looks from the cliff path at Cald Edge. Where the pressure has bent them, they curl over on themselves into a whorl, tight as the ridges on a thumb. Tom calls it the Knot. Every man on the face knows to leave it standing.

The colliery clerk comes up in February with the wage book, and he wants marks from the men who cannot write. Tom signs his own name in big looping letters, but the clerk slides the ink pad across anyway. Tom presses his thumb down hard, rolls it, and lifts it away. What's left on the page is a whorl that matches the one in the seam, the same tight curl, the same drift to the left. The clerk squints, grunts, and moves on to the next man in line.

That night you sit at the kitchen table with the lamp turned low and copy the pattern with a pencil stub onto the back of a feed bill. Your hand keeps wandering off the lines. Tom watches from the settle for a long time before he takes the pencil from you and draws one more wave, slowly, at the edge of the bend where the Knot tightens. "That's where the roof came down in ninety-one," he says. "Everything that stayed standing after bent just like that."

When he goes up to bed, you press your thumb into the soot on the windowsill and drag it carefully across the glass, and the lines come out just as they did on the page, one wave after another, until the whorl closes at the centre like a door.
