Stylised wave tattoo on a foot

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of two bare feet resting on a dark wooden surface, with a large tattoo of stacked, curling waves on the outer side of the nearer foot. The waves are built from dense, flowing hatched and contour lines in black and grey, giving a shaded, engraved look. A fainter, similar wave design appears on the second foot, and the warm, soft lighting keeps the focus on the tattoo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bronze was scrap from a broken lamp, and nobody had asked for anything on it. Maro refused to cut a name or a saint's face. She said the metal only took lines that moved, so she sat on the workshop step above the harbour at Sarpe and began with the long stroke a sailor makes when he pulls an oar and lets it swing back. Each line rose, curled over its own crest and fell into the next, until the bowl was stacked with water going somewhere it could not finish.

The harbour master came by at noon to ask why she was wasting good metal. She did not look up. Her husband had gone out at dawn with the grain boats, the wind had turned in the night, and every line she cut was one the sea had already drawn. Cutting it down, she said, was the only way she knew to keep it in one place. He laughed, bought a loaf and went off muttering about women and their superstitions.

She finished the bowl at dusk. The hatching had grown so dense the bronze looked nearly black, and when she tilted it toward the lamp the lines caught the light and seemed to lift. She set it on the sill facing the sea, filled it from the cistern and waited. The surface shivered, then steadied, and the lamplight ran along the furrows as if the wave had stepped inside and decided to stay.

Her husband's boat came round the point at first light, low in the water and heavy with fish. He climbed the steps wet to the knees, saw the bowl on the sill and asked whose it was. Maro handed him the burin and told him to cut one line of his own. He tried, and the line came out straight, and the water in the bowl went flat as a plate. She took the tool back and cut the next curl, and the surface rocked gently again.
