Tribal heart with swirling flourishes

Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash

A bold black outline of a heart on a white background, with its left side open and a spiral curl at the top of the right lobe. Tapering solid black swirls and curling tendrils sprout from the right side of the heart, giving a tribal character. The design is entirely black ink on white, with no shading or colour, and is centred in the frame.

The vine had come up through the cracked step of the bakehouse in the spring, and Mabel Crane would not let Tomas pull it out. 'It's doing no harm,' she said, and went on kneading. By midsummer it had reached the eaves and begun feeling along the gutter like something looking for a door.

Past the last cottage the forest began, oak and holly, and the villagers did not go in past the stile after dark. Everyone knew the old tale of the heart-shaped gap in the trees, where a girl had gone in to fetch back her brother and come out with leaves growing from her shoulders. Nobody believed it, except that the vine had come from that edge of the wood, and its new leaves curled tight into little spirals, like ferns that had forgotten how to open.

In autumn Tomas found the trellis hanging loose on one side, and a hollow in the hedge where nothing had been before, shaped like a heart with its left side left open. He cut a branch to take down the lane and it bled sap, dark and sweet. Mabel sat on the step with her hands in her lap and said the wood had only ever wanted what anyone wants, to be asked in.

That winter the bakehouse stayed warm without fuel. Tomas kept the stile unlatched and left a loaf on the stone each night, and each morning the crust was gone and a new tendril had reached a little farther along the wall, curling at its tip like a question answered.
