Black and grey · Flash

A heart outline sits at the centre of a dense, symmetrical border of looping swirls, scallops and teardrop motifs. The work is drawn in fine black linework with no shading, and the heart's interior is left plain white. The design is shown alone on a plain white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Come closer, you lot at the back, and mind the sawdust. I'll tell you about Mrs Ashdown's lace heart, the one that hung above the coconut shy the summer the Harvest Wonder came through Ledbury with three elephants and no one who knew how to feed them. She was a widow who made doilies for the church bazaar, and she had a rule: every pattern she stitched had to close in on itself, no loose ends, or it was no good to her.

Now, her husband Walter had gone off to the coast with the fairground men, and the story goes he'd promised to be home before the last leaf fell. He didn't come. Instead there was a letter every Thursday, written on the back of handbills in a looping hand, always the same words: the wheel turns, the swings go round, I am coming home by the path of curls.

She couldn't make sense of it, so she sat at her kitchen table and began to stitch. Every curl led into the next, and every scallop caught its neighbour, round and round, until a heart stood up off the cloth with its border gone to lace. She worked on it for three weeks by the lamp. On the last night she held it to the window and saw that the curls running around the edge matched the loops in Walter's letters exactly, as if he'd been drawing her a map all along.

The next morning the fair had gone, but a man with sawdust in his collar stood on her step, turning a cheap tin ring in his fingers and grinning like a boy caught in the orchard. She didn't tell him she'd known all along. She only said the heart was too heavy for her to carry, and he'd better come in and help her hang it where the light could reach it.
