Her son Lorcan, who could hold a horse's bridle and not much else, asked where the lion had gone. She told him it had been sold to a man in Doncaster who wanted it for a shop window. The clowns had walked home. The wire had rusted through. Only the tent was left, stitched in six colours, and the black centre pole, carved all the way up with thorns, the way her grandfather had cut them so the rain would run off the rope.
On the last night a stranger in a grey coat paid in silver, stood at the back, and said the pole would fetch more than the tent if she sold it to him. Ottilie laughed until she coughed. Then she told him what her grandmother had told her: that the thorns were the spines of the fish that had carried the first circus across the sea, and that each spine held a little luck, and a tent that lost them all would fall by morning.
He left without the pole. In the morning the canvas was still standing, and Lorcan swore the thorns looked sharper than they had the night before. Ottilie rolled the tobacco tin into her sleeve, went out to the horses, and found the grey coat's silver lying in the straw, every coin bent in half.
