A photograph of a black and grey tattoo of a stylised butterfly with flowing, curling linework. The wings are shaded with soft grey gradients, and the lower body tapers into thin tendrils. The tattoo sits centrally on the upper back against warm skin, with the top of the neck and hair visible at the edges of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mags Tennant had been hammering the same curl of iron for three days, and the fishermen's wives had started to talk. The gate for the Pilchard Row cottages was meant to be plain. Old Ebbe Stroud, who had taught her to draw heat out of mild steel before she could spell her own name, had left it to her with a note pinned to the bench: Make it move.

She heated the bar until it went the colour of a late sunset over the breakwater, then drew it out thin, tapering to a point that would not hold a shape for long. The wings came slowly. She riveted a loop of scrap to a spine of flat bar, and the whole thing seemed to lift off the anvil when the wind came up the harbour and rattled the shed door.

Ebbe's pattern book had a sketch of a butterfly on its last page, tendrils trailing off like smoke from a snuffed lamp. He had never made it. Mags thought he had been waiting for someone to ask for it. Nobody had, so she made it for herself out of the offcuts and hung it on the shed hook.

When the gate was delivered, the Pilchard Row widow stood looking at it for a long time. Then she asked where the butterfly had come from. Mags said it had been left over. The widow said she would take it too, and paid in coins still warm from her apron pocket.
