Black tribal shoulder and upper arm tattoo
Blackwork · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A shirtless man, cropped below the neck, shows a large black tribal design over his shoulder that extends onto the upper arm and chest. The design uses bold solid black swirls, curved spikes and sweeping flowing lines, with no greys or colour. The skin around the outer edge looks red and slightly inflamed, which suggests the tattoo may be fresh or recently healed.

Hetty Crane had the forge lit before the church bell, and by the time Tom Ashby arrived with the cart, the iron was already glowing the colour of a bad sunrise. "Not that one," she said, when he reached for the flat bar. "The gate's for Mrs Fell, and she wants it to look like the wind's been at it."

For three weeks they bent scrolls that curled in on themselves and spikes that bit out at the edges like hawthorn. Tom drew the pattern on the workshop wall in chalk, rubbing it out each night when the lamp smoked. Hetty never drew anything first. She heated a length, turned it on the horn, and let the metal tell her where it wanted to go. "Iron knows the way round a thing better than you do," she said, hammering the last spiral tight.
On the final night Tom cracked a spike clean off, the sound like a dropped plate. He stood with the broken piece in his palm, sure he had ruined the commission, but Hetty only looked at it. Then she took it, heated the stub, and welded a new barb at a sharper angle so the whole line seemed to snap forward. "Everything wants to go somewhere," she said. "You just have to let it."
Mrs Fell came at dawn in her husband's coat, looked at the gate for a long time, and laughed for the first time Tom had heard. She touched the cold swirls and said the thorns looked like the storm that took him off the Dogger, and that it was the most honest thing she had seen since the funeral. She paid in coins and left the gate standing open, and it stayed that way, rocking gently on its hinges in the morning breeze.
