Dear Ysolde, the tide took the last of the spiral stones on the third night of the spring thaw, and the harbour master has forbidden anyone to dive for what remains. I write from the salt house at Maro Keel, where the drying racks are still furred white from the flats and the wind smells of iron. Nothing here has dried properly since Tuesday.

You will remember the moon-disc cut into the cliff at Ansel Reach, the black wheel of stone whose coils turn inward like a fern unrolling. Every child in the kingdom learns to trace it with a wet finger. The old saying is that a spiral keeps your path from doubling back on itself, and that anyone who loses their way on the flats should walk the coil from the outer edge to the heart and never stop until their feet are cold.

I did as the saying told me, though the surveyors had sealed the cliff with pitch. Beneath the pitch, the inner coil opened on its far side, a narrow seam cut by someone who meant it to be walked through. Behind it was a hollow, and in the hollow hung eleven tally cords, each knotted once for every ship that left Maro Keel and never returned. Lord Teodric has ordered them burned. I have not burned them. I have tied them to the drying rack, where the wind can read them.

If you come in autumn, walk the spiral from the outside in, and do not stop at the heart. Keep walking until the salt crust cracks under your heels and the sea sounds like it is behind you. Bring a length of cord. We will need a twelfth knot, and I would rather it were tied by someone who knows the way back out. Yours, Imre.
