Fine line curling wave on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single thin black line curls into a open hook or wave shape across the wrist, with the end tapering off towards the hand. The linework is even and delicate, and the ink is a dark grey-black with no shading or colour. The wrist fills the left and centre of the frame, with the hand and a dark sleeve at the right and a blurred light background behind.

The swell came round the point again this morning, the long slow kind that stands up off the reef and hangs there before it folds. Pa would have called it showing off. I stood on the slip with the mackerel net over my arm and watched it curl over the rocks, and I thought of you at the kitchen table last spring, telling me the sea was only water with ideas above its station.

Mrs Pascoe has taken the shop on the harbour front and put a kettle where the bait freezer used to be, so you can stop asking me whether anything has changed. Nothing has, except Tomas sold the Morwenna in March and now the only boats in the cove belong to people who don't know how to fish. I've been sorting Pa's things for the cottage clearance. The tide tables are in a biscuit tin with his spectacles and a fishhook you once swore was cursed.
Under the tables there was a sheet of cartridge paper, folded in four. On it, in his square pencil, he'd drawn a single line that rose, curled over on itself and tailed off into nothing, without lifting the pencil once. Underneath he'd written your name and crossed it out, then written mine and crossed that out too. I have no idea what he meant. I think he was trying to draw the moment just before the water breaks, when it can still change its mind.
I've pinned it above the kettle. When the light comes low across the slip, the line makes the same shape as the swell, only smaller, and I find I can stand and look at it for longer than I can look at the sea. Come home when you're ready. Bring the good scissors, and I'll show you where he kept the pencil.
