Nobody crossed the Harrow Gap in October without a guide, and Dilys Parry had guided it for thirty-one years. She taught me to read the wind before she taught me the path. "Watch the cairns," she said, pointing with her stick. "Where the stones lean, the air is turning."

The third week of October, a carrier's mule went lame below the tarn and we fell three hours behind the post cart. Dilys stopped at the bend where the old drovers had daubed a black smear of soot on the boulder so they would know the turn. She crouched, licked a finger and held it up. "Wind's going round," she said. "It'll come off the north face in a minute and pull everything after it."
It did. The gust came up the gully like a hand unrolling rope, lifted the mule's pack cover and pressed it flat against the wall, then split off down the valley in two long streams, one toward Ennerdale and one toward the sheep pens. We pressed against the rock and waited. When it passed, Dilys was already on her feet, grinning and tapping the blackened stone with her stick.
We reached the inn at dusk with the mule walking sound and the lamps lit in the window. Dilys left me her stick that winter, and a rule with it: never cross a turn the wind has not finished with. I have kept to it on every pass since, and I have never lost a load.
