Circular spiral knotwork on an upper arm
Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a black ink tattoo on the upper arm, showing a circular ring enclosing two interlocking spiral forms. The linework is bold and solid, with the spirals and knotwork filled in dark against the pale skin. The design is centred and symmetrical within the frame, with the arm's curve and a dark sleeve visible at the edges.

We danced to 'Sweet Sue' four times. Each time we came round past the window the drawing had grown a little fainter, the way breath does, and I told myself the damp was taking it. Mr Pike had the lights down by eleven. When I went to fetch my coat the ring had been wiped clean, all but one curl at the bottom where the glass stayed cold.
This morning I found the same shape scratched into the brass rail of the bandstand, small and neat, with a date beside it that I won't write down in case you laugh. Tom's cornet case is gone from the stage, and nobody here has seen him since. I've kept his coat, though, and I've checked both pockets twice.
