Black tribal swirl tattoo on wrist

Blackwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of the back of a hand and wrist showing a bold black tribal-style design of swirling curves and tapering points. The lines are solid and smooth with soft grey shading at the edges, and the tattoo sits against warm skin on a dark background. A thin beaded bracelet in pink, purple, yellow and white wraps the wrist to the left of the design.

Mam had the kettle on when I came up the back lane, chalk still grey across my palm. Everyone on Pit Row knew what it meant when a marking went wrong on the face. Dad had seen it at Hartley's seam that spring, a looping shape the old deputies called the drift's tail, curls running back on themselves until they tapered to a point where the roof had gone soft.

Grandad Walsh taught me to draw it on the slate by the range when I was small enough to be sent out for the milk. Start with a hook, he said, let the wrist go loose, bring it round and finish the end like a wave breaking the wrong way. Don't lift the chalk till the curl closes. The seam never closes clean, so you have to close it for it. I practised until my fingers ached and the slate had no clean corner left.

The night the cage stuck at four hundred feet, I drew it on the lamp room door, three swirls one inside the other, and felt daft doing it. The men came up one at a time, grey-faced and quiet, and each of them touched the chalk as he passed, the way you touch a doorframe going out. Nobody said anything about it. Nobody needed to.

By morning the chalk had worn to a smear on the wood. Dad went over the lines with his pen knife, slow and careful, so they'd stay put. He said that was the trick of it. Nothing held unless somebody kept coming back to it.
