A thin crescent hangs over the Town Hall, sharp as a paring from a fingernail, and you notice it the way you notice the fuel gauge, without thinking, then think about it anyway.

Nobody rides the 2 at this hour except the regulars. Mr Okafor sleeps against the window with his briefcase on his knees. Two nurses from the Infirmary share one earbud and argue quietly about a man called Tony. At Hunslet Road a woman in a green parka gets on, taps her card twice because the first tap failed, and sits behind the driver, which nobody does. She asks you to tell her when the bus reaches the river.

You tell her. You always tell people. The Aire comes up black and wide under the Victoria Bridge, and the reflected lamps break into long bright strokes, like a pen working across paper. She watches it with her mouth slightly open. At the stop by the bridge she stands, thanks you without looking up, and steps down into the wet.

When you empty the bus at the depot, you find a receipt folded into a tight square under her seat. On the back, in blue biro, someone has drawn a small moon in one unbroken line, the way you would sketch something you meant to keep.
