Palm trees, moon and waves on a wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small circular design shows two palm trees on a shoreline, a crescent moon and scattered stars and dots in the sky, with stylised wave lines below. The linework is solid black with grey shading on the palms and waves, and the dots add texture to the sky. The tattoo sits centred on the inner wrist, photographed in warm sunlight with beaded bracelets above it.

The painted sea on the big top backdrop has been cracking since the spring, and Mr Okafor won't let anyone touch it until the last fortnight in Margate is done. You stand on the sawdust at dusk with a pot of ultramarine and a rag, and the tent smells of diesel and wet canvas. Two palms lean over a shoreline none of you has ever seen. The moon above them is a crescent cut from tin foil years ago, and it still catches the work lights.

'Leave the stars,' says Dolores from the ring, pulling her cardigan tight. 'Nobody reads a dot, love. They only see the waves.' You keep flicking white dots from an old toothbrush anyway, the way you did the night the lions were sold, because a round tent should have something in its sky besides rigging and bulbs.
By midnight the ticket office is shut and the big top is a dark hoop with one bulb swinging. You climb the ladder and look down at the backdrop: the palms, the moon, the curl of wave you spent three nights getting right. From up here it looks like a small picture of a holiday nobody in this company will ever take. Then Dolores's torch finds you on the ladder and she says the bookings in Scarborough came through after all.
You climb down with paint on your knuckles and the last wave still wet, and by morning the van is loaded and the palms are facing north.
