Black world map tattoo on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Three photographs show the same forearm from different angles against a plain cream wall. A large black world map covers the outer forearm, with its continents in solid, slightly textured ink and no visible shading. A small line of text sits on the inner forearm near the wrist, too small to read at this resolution. The image is almost entirely black ink on skin, with no colour.

The Maren Ruth is three days out of Peterhead when the chart table goes under, and you are the one who has to dry the Atlantic off the only atlas aboard. Skipper Tom Garrow says the paper will keep. It won't. The ink bleeds into the Pacific like tea into sugar, and by morning Greenland is a grey smudge you can't trust.

So you do what your grandmother did in the herring yards at Fraserburgh and learn the coastlines by heart. You know the Cape by the way the swell lifts off it, and Iceland by the cold that comes sideways off the ice. The crew start asking you for directions to places none of them will ever see. Ruby, the youngest deckhand, wants to know where her brother is stationed. You tell her Newfoundland, because that is the shape it makes in your head, and she believes you.
In the gale off Rockall they lose the net and nearly the boat with it. Afterwards you sit on an upturned fish box with the swollen atlas on your knees and realise you could redraw every continent from memory on the back of a gutting board. You can't carry paper through weather like this, but you can carry the map.
So you take the marker from the wheelhouse drawer and start on yourself, a coast at a time, while the lamp swings and Tom curses the radio. By dawn the whole world is inked where the sea can't reach it, and nobody on the boat asks why.
