Black ink botanical vine with leaves and small flowers curling across the inner wrist, with the palm and fingers raised behind it.

Scrolling vine and flowers on the wrist

Botanical · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A single black tattoo of a scrolling vine with pointed leaves and small five-petal flowers sits on the inner wrist. The linework is solid and fairly bold, with flat black fill on the leaves and flowers and no visible grey shading. The vine rises diagonally from the bottom of the wrist, and the hand is shown palm-facing with the fingers up against a pale, warm-toned background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lion went to a sanctuary in Wales in August, the big top has been folded in the back of a lorry since, and now you spend the wet October painting the last wagon in a field behind Hallam's Farm. Mr Dacre pays you in cash and cigarettes and says the gold leaf is for the posters, though nobody reads posters any more. You tell him the wagon is already gold enough, and he laughs in the way that means he has stopped sleeping.

The vine is your grandmother's pattern, the one her father carried from the Pinfold Brothers' bandwagons before the war. You load the brush with black enamel because gold costs money and the bank has taken the rest. Every scroll starts low on the panel and climbs toward the roofline, the way the old men taught, with leaves pointed like arrowheads and five-petalled flowers filled solid so they can be read from the lane by anyone driving past too fast.

A man from the council arrives on a Thursday with a clipboard and asks what the wagon is for. You say it is for going somewhere. He tells you the scrap yard in Goole pays by weight, and you say you know, and you keep painting while he writes something down that will not help anyone.

At dusk the vine reaches the last corner, where the paint nearly runs out. You leave one flower as an outline only, unfilled, so that whoever buys the wagon for firewood will know somebody was still climbing when the light went.
