Tuesday. Mrs Okonedo's shop on Harbour Row had the seven cat faces in a flat packet pinned behind the till, and I have spent my whole wage on them, which Dad will say is typical. Each one is a different cat drawn in pencil, grey and brown, with whiskers you could almost feel. The one with the little ribbon looks like Pearl, who used to sit on the bandstand rail every summer, and I swear she knew who I was.

Friday. The Majestic was packed for the Saturday waltz. Ronnie Pell had asked me to dance twice before the interval and I hadn't said yes either time. In the ladies' cloakroom I pressed a grey tabby onto the inside of my wrist, rubbed it with a damp flannel the way the packet said, and counted to thirty. When I came out the band was playing Moonlight on the Pier and the floor had gone quiet in the wrong way.

Ronnie was leaning on the pillar by the cloakroom with his cap in his hands. He didn't say anything clever. He looked at my wrist, then at the cat, and said it was the nicest thing he'd seen all year that wasn't in a shop window. We danced the quickstep with my arm held up between us like a flag, and the bandleader laughed so hard he missed his cue.

Sunday. The transfer came off in the bath, leaving a faint brown ghost that Mum says is just dirt. Ronnie has the other six in his tin for the next dance. He says he's choosing the sleepy-eyed grey one. I told him the ribbon cat is mine, and that's a promise, Diary, even if it's only on paper.
