Mockingbird on a branch with script on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink mockingbird perches on a thin branch with small leaves, and a handwritten quotation in script runs alongside it. The bird is drawn with fine hatched linework and soft shading, and the lettering is crisp and dark. The tattoo is shown in black ink only on a pale forearm against a plain light background.

Folks laughed, then they stopped laughing, because that bird only ever sang the words of people who had been good to somebody. It never copied the drunk man who stole the Pruitts' hens. It never once copied the sheriff's laugh. So when Lem Pruitt took his shotgun down off the wall one evening, saying he'd had enough of a bird that mocked him, his wife Ada stood in the doorway with flour to her elbows and told him he'd have to shoot the whole valley first.

He didn't. He sat on the step till dark and listened, and the bird sang him his father's old hymn, the one nobody had sung since the funeral. Lem came inside that night with his eyes wet and hung the gun back on its hooks. There's a wrong thing in shooting a bird that only tells the truth, and Lem knew it before the rest of us did. Now go on, off to bed, and mind the cat.
