Blackwork floral sleeve on a woman's arm
Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman in a patterned bikini leans over a boat ladder in clear turquoise water, with her head tilted down so her face is not visible. Her right arm carries a large black sleeve tattoo of tribal-style scrollwork on the upper arm and dense floral and mandala-like motifs on the forearm, rendered in solid black ink with fine shading. The composition is colour-rich, with the blue-green sea and a white outboard motor framing the tattooed arm.

The boatman's daughter had her ink before she had her boat. Her mother said the sea had got into her skin, and her father laughed and said it was nonsense, right up until the February he went out past the breakwater and did not come back. After that nobody on the top floor of Harbour Court argued with her about anything.

The lift at Harbour Court only worked on Tuesdays, so she climbed the eleven flights every evening with a tin of black ink and a bent pin. On the stairwell walls she drew what the sea drew on the sand: scrolls that folded into scrolls, flowers with too many petals, and rings inside rings. The neighbours swept the landings and said nothing. Down on the quay, the white outboard motor her father had left chained to the bollard gathered gulls and rust, and she would not let anyone sell it.
One night in April she went up to the roof with her sleeve rolled high and inked the whole tide onto her own arm, spiral by spiral, until the skin was dark to the wrist. When she finished, the harbour had gone flat and silver. She walked down all eleven flights, out past the fish market, and stepped onto the bottom rung of the ladder. The water lifted to meet her like a held breath let go, and under it, turning slow, she saw the boat coming home with the engine ticking over and her father at the tiller, his cap full of salt and his face the colour of the sea.
