Winged back piece on a beach
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A woman stands on a beach with her back to the camera and her arms outstretched, showing a large black and grey winged design across her upper back and shoulders. The feathers are shaded in greys with a central black chevron panel, and smaller designs are visible on her upper arm and lower back. The stormy sky and sea sit behind her, and a teal bikini contrasts with the monochrome ink.

The gulls had gone inland before the cloud came over the headland, and Nell Pardoe knew then that the Harrow boat would not come back on the flood. She stood on the shingle with her father's brass telescope and watched the feathers skid past her boots on the wind, long grey ones torn from the terns, like pages blown from a book nobody had finished. Her father used to say the sea wrote its weather in them if you read them the right way.

The old coat hung on the peg by the lifeboat house, the one he had stitched from sailcloth, black at the centre where the pitch had soaked through and pale at the edges where the salt had bleached it. She took it down. The shoulders had been cut wide for a man who had rowed out in every gale for thirty years, and it swallowed her whole. She buckled the worn leather band above her elbow anyway, the way he always had, so the sleeve would not flap when she pulled on the line.
Out past the Nab the lamp on the Harrow boat blinked twice and went dark. Nell ran down the slipway and into the surf with the rocket line coiled over one shoulder, and the spray hit her like handfuls of thrown gravel. Somewhere in the grey a man was calling, though it might only have been the wind saying her name the way her father had.
They were all back by dawn, six of them, soaked and grey-lipped and laughing at nothing. Nell hung the coat to dry on the peg, and when she stepped back she saw the salt had dried across its back in shapes like wings, lifted and still. She left it there. Her father would have wanted the sea to see it.
