Black and grey geometric sleeve on a upper arm
Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with long blonde hair is photographed from behind, wearing a black and white tie-dye bikini on a wooden deck beside a white beach hut. Her right arm carries a full sleeve of black and grey tattoos with mandala-like rosettes, bands of geometric pattern and dense shading. A smaller tattoo is visible on her left forearm, and the composition is a bright, outdoor, natural light shot.

The fan at Tindle Pit had been losing its breath since Lent, and Idris Rowe was the only man on the surface who could say why. He sat in the drawing office above the lamp room with the ventilation plan spread across a trestle, galleries inked in black, air courses shaded grey, and every junction marked with a small ring. His mother had taught him to rule a circle without a compass, pressing a thumbnail into the paper and turning the wrist, and he still drew them that way.

Nobody in the village believed the air could be drawn. The overman laughed over the tea urn. 'Air goes where it pleases, Rowe,' he said, and went down anyway with his lamp and his bad knee. Idris kept at it. Each night he laid another band of hatching across the sheet, the lines crossing and doubling until it looked like a pattern for a chapel floor, and each morning the readings from the anemometer matched a line he had drawn.
On the eleventh of March they did not. Idris carried the plan to the pit head in the rain, wrapped in oilcloth against his chest, and found the crew sealing a stopping that had been built in the wrong place. He unrolled the sheet on an upturned crate. The rings lined up with the doors, the bands ran where the draughts ran, and the old man read it in silence before taking off his cap.
They opened the stopping that afternoon. The air came through cold and clean, smelling of wet stone, and the fan began to turn with a sound like a held breath let go. Idris pinned the plan to the lamp room wall beside the brass tallies. It stayed there for thirty years, its rings browning at the edges, while the men under the hill kept breathing by lines he had ruled by hand.
