Blackwork geometric bands on lower legs
Blackwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare lower legs are shown from the knee down, one standing on a chair, with solid black geometric tattoos. The left leg carries a honeycomb of hexagons running up from the calf toward the knee, and both legs have bold black bands with thin white chevron lines near the ankle. The right leg shows concentric arcs within a solid black band, all set against a plain pale background in black and grey tones.

You are fourteen when Tamar, the beekeeper of Kalos, hands you a bronze scraper and tells you the terrace wall is yours to finish before the autumn rains. The hives here are not woven baskets but clay cells set into the stone, row above row, each one a little six-sided room. Every lip must be smoothed so the wax will not crack in the heat. She shows you how to press the hexagon with the heel of your hand, then turn the next one a fraction so the edges lock like teeth.

For a month you work from first light while the bees go about their business and mostly ignore you. Tamar says they know a maker from a stranger by the way the hand moves. Along the base of the wall, where the rain runs off the hill, you cut chevrons pointing upward, so the water slides away instead of pooling. Tamar says they should look like arrows aimed back down the path toward the well, where the women draw water at dusk. At the well's mouth you carve rings within rings, so the bucket's knock will carry up the slope and tell the bees the day is ending.
On the last evening the swarm lifts from the top row and does not settle. It spirals down the path after the women with their jars, and then it hangs above the well like a loose net of gold. You stand with your scraper in your hand. Tamar folds her arms and says nothing for a long time. Then the cloud drops and pours itself through the rings you cut, filling the stone mouth of the well until the whole hill hums. Tamar says the wall was finished the moment they chose it. You wipe the bronze on your apron and do not go back up for your tools.
