Angel wings tattoo across the back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a bare back with large, detailed angel wings tattooed across the shoulder blades, spreading outward on both sides of the spine. The feathers are shaded in soft greys with fine highlights, giving a three-dimensional, realistic finish. The composition is cropped below the waist, with the skin tones and lace underwear framing the wings.

You climb the north tower of Carrick Lowe because the keeper says the jackdaws have been bringing feathers in again, and nobody else will take the stair with its bottom three steps gone. The wind through the arrow slits smells of wet mortar and old smoke. In the room under the roof, where the lead went years ago, the floor is a drift of grey and black quills, sorted into little heaps by someone who seems to have been counting them.

Then you find the wing. It lies half-buried in rubble where the parapet fell, a carved pinion as long as your arm, its feathers cut so finely the mason must have held the chisel like a pen. Someone began it for the chapel roof in the 1600s and never finished the other side. Two centuries of rain have softened the edges, but the shading survives: soft greys pooling where the stone went darker under the lintel, and a few sharp flecks that catch the light like the sheen on a crow's breast.
You carry it down the stair one step at a time, certain it grows heavier on every landing. At the bottom the keeper waits with a flask and a question he has been too polite to ask. You tell him the truth, that the feathers were meant to lift something off the ground and never managed it. He laughs, then stops, because the stone is warm from your hands and the jackdaws are circling low over the courtyard, calling to one another as if they had lost their place in a hymn.
