Mountain and bridge landscape leg tattoos
Blackwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a person's legs from behind, standing on a white cloth against a pale backdrop, with shorts at the top of the frame. Both legs are covered in a mirrored landscape of mountains, clouds, a bridge-like structure with towers and horizontal bands, drawn in bold solid black lines and fills. The image is entirely black and grey, with the tattoo spanning from the thighs down to above the ankles.

Dear Marguerite,

The lift in Carrow House has been dead since Tuesday, so I have taken to counting the stairs as a kind of penance. Fourteen floors up, the view I promised you is still there: the grey span of the Haldane Bridge, two towers standing in the fog like stone chess pieces, and beyond them the hills going blue one behind another until they give up and become sky.
I went down to the river yesterday with a flask and a sketchbook, the way you used to make me. The wardens at the far pier say the bridge was built the year before the mill closed, and that the pale lines running across the deck are the old tide marks, scraped into the concrete by men who wanted the river to remember them. I did not believe them until I saw the lines were still there under the rain.
Here is what I did in the end. I drew the bridge twice, once the right way round and once reversed, and laid the sheets side by side on the kitchen table so the towers faced each other like two people who had argued and would not sit down. Then I could not decide which was the true one. The mountains came out the same either way, which I suppose is the closest thing to an answer I will get.
Write when you can. The bridge lamps come on at four now, and I have started waiting for them.
Yours, Ines
