Feather tattoo on the ribs

Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A large feather is tattooed diagonally across the side of the ribcage, with its quill curving from upper left to lower right. The barbs are rendered in fine, layered linework and soft grey shading, giving the feather depth and a sense of movement. The black and white photograph is framed close to the torso, with a hand resting on the hip and a patterned top at the edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Tessa Marrow had walked the Salt Track for nineteen summers, and in all that time she had never seen a feather lie straight on the road. Birds dropped them in the scrub and let the wind take them. This one lay across the wheel ruts as neat as a letter left on a doormat, its quill pointing west, the way the sun went down. She picked it up, blew the grit from its barbs, and tucked it into the band of her hat.

Her brother Alfie had driven the water cart out of Coldwater two days before and not come back. The mule had returned alone, dragging its harness through the mesquite. Everyone said the flats had taken him, the way they took men who strayed from the markers. Tessa did not say much. She only asked the old women which way a lost thing would go if it had any sense.

The feather seemed to answer. At every fork where she stopped to doubt herself, it lifted in the breeze and settled with its quill toward the western branch. She followed it past three dry washes and a stand of bleached posts until she heard a hammering that was not the wind.

Alfie was sitting in the shade of a collapsed cart, mending the wheel with a pair of pliers and a great deal of swearing. He looked up, saw the feather in her hat, and said, "Took your time." She sat down beside him and handed him the flask, and the feather, when she set it on the sand between them, did not move again.
