Bleeding puzzle piece on upper back
Back · Colour · Photo
A single jigsaw puzzle piece appears to be missing from the skin, with red dripping lines running from its lower edge. The piece has dark grey shading along its inner edges and a grey outline, giving it a raised, three-dimensional look. A soft red flush surrounds the design against the pale skin of the upper back, and the frame is cropped at the neck and shoulders.

Thursday, 14 January. Sleet came in sideways again, so Dad sent me to the bottom barn for the sheep nuts, and that was when I found the jigsaw on the feed bench where he'd left it at Christmas. The lighthouse one, nine hundred pieces. We'd done the sky and most of the sea. Someone had been at the middle with a penknife, because the cardboard was gouged in a neat square, and the gap was the size of my palm.

I knelt on the straw to look for the piece on the floor and found it stuck to the underside of the bench instead, warm and tacky, red as a cut. It was the exact shape of the hole. When I pressed it in, it sat flush, and the lighthouse looked whole for the first time since Gran's cat knocked the box off the shelf in October. Then the drips started. They ran off the edge of the table and pattered onto the sacks like rain on a tin roof. Dad came in, looked at the mess, and said only that Gran used to say the farm takes what it's owed and gives back what it can spare.
I tried to peel the piece out again before supper. It wouldn't come. The cardboard under my thumbnail felt soft, almost like skin, and the lighthouse beam on the box had gone the colour of rust.
I've left the barn door ajar tonight so the sleet can get in. The sheep are restless and the bench is still dripping. If the picture is finished by morning I'll tell Dad we need a new box. If it isn't, I'll be the one who has to fit the last piece.
