The snow had sealed the Fellgate Inn since Tuesday, and by the third night you had stopped counting the guests who wanted hot water. The parcel came on the last post van before the road closed, soaked at one corner and addressed in a hand you didn't recognise: Miss Ada Pryce, care of the inn, to be kept until the thaw.

Nobody came for it. You set it on the shelf above the boot room, between the tin of cocoa and a barometer that had stuck at Change. Each evening you lifted it down to check the wet corner hadn't split. The ribbon was red and stiff with old wax, tied in a bow with a small knot at its heart, and someone had gone over its edges with a black pen so the loops would keep their shape in any light.

On the seventh night the power dipped and the lamps went amber. You untied the knot to see what was inside, then stopped, because the ribbon was the only thing in the house that still looked as if it knew where it was going. You folded the paper back over the box, tied the bow again with numb fingers, loops first, the way your mother taught you so it would hold, and left the parcel where Ada would find it if the road ever cleared.
