Blindfolded woman with owl and wings
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
A drawn tattoo design on cream paper showing a woman in profile wearing a blindfold, with large feathered wings spreading behind her and a sprig of feathers above her head. An owl sits below her face, and a partial clock face with Roman numerals and ink splatters fills the lower area. The linework is detailed, the shading is soft and realistic, and the design uses only black and grey.

You learn the crossing by its sounds before its lights: the hum of the floodlamps over the barrier, the wet clack of the arm lifting, and the owl on the wire above the customs hut that never once looks at the lorries. Your grandmother used to say owls see what people hide from themselves. You thought that was the kind of thing grandmothers say, until the night you needed it to be true.

The officer at Hollin Bridge does not check faces. He checks the clock above his desk, a brass dial with Roman numerals gone the colour of weak tea, its hands stopped at ten to three since before you were born. "Papers," he says, and you hand him yours, the ones with your name on them and the other name underneath, the one you were given so you could leave. He turns them over twice. He does not read them. He looks at the clock.
"Anything to declare?" You think of the sealed tin in your coat, the letter folded inside it, the seven years of lies that fit in a fist. You say nothing. He nods as if silence were the only honest answer he has heard all year, and stamps the page. Behind you the owl drops off the wire without a sound, and the barrier lifts for a lorry that was never going to be stopped.
On the far side the road is wet and the air smells of cut hay. You look back once. The clock is still at ten to three, and on the fence post by the bridge the owl is waiting, head turned all the way round, watching you go as if you were the one who had been blind.
