Skull and rose design sketch
Neo-trad · Mixed · Flash
A drawn design of a human skull in profile with its jaw open, showing upper and lower teeth. A red rose with layered petals sits within the open mouth, with more leaves and petals beneath it. The outlines are fine dark pencil or ink, with soft grey shading in the eye sockets and red colour on the rose and some leaves, on a textured off-white paper background.

The frost has held the top field for nine days, and you are the one who has to break the drain at the bottom of it with a bar and a bad temper. Your uncle says the water came up from under the old hedgerow, which is why you are kneeling in the mud at seven in the morning with the sky the colour of pewter. The bar hits something that rings instead of gives.

It is a skull, pale as a bowl of milk, wedged in clay with its jaw hanging open as though it was halfway through a sentence when the field took it. Someone has pushed a rose stem into the gap where its teeth should be, a dry thing with three hips still clinging on, and one red petal stuck to the bone like a wax seal. You know the rose. It is the one your grandmother planted by the back gate the year she buried the dog, and it has never once flowered in the cold.
You carry it up to the kitchen in a feed sack because you are not ready to tell your uncle yet. Over tea you ask who lived at the old cottage before the hedge swallowed it. He says a woman who sang to the hens and never let the frost into the house, and that the parish wrote her down as lost. You look at the sack by the range, the rose stem leaning out of the top of it like a question nobody has asked.
In the morning you take the skull back to the field and set it in the hedge roots where the wild rose grows, teeth to the sky. Next spring, you tell yourself, you will come back and see whether it flowers. You do not have to believe in it. You only have to leave the gate open so something can find its way in.
