Pencil sketch of an abstract serpent creature
Black and grey · Flash
A loose pencil drawing on textured paper shows a serpent-like creature with an open jaw, a visible eye and fanged teeth, set among flowing, tendril-like forms. Sketchy, overlapping linework and light hatching build up the shading, with small dots and angular blocks scattered around the outline. The design fills most of the sheet, with the subject placed slightly off centre and the paper photographed at an angle.

The reunion is in the sports hall, because the art room was knocked through years ago, and you spend the first hour avoiding Mr Pardoe's cardigan by the squash table. Someone has pinned photocopies of old Year Eleven work along the wall bars. Yours is there, a pencil serpent with too many lines, labelled in red biro: unfinished. Lorna from the year above tells you it was the best thing in the department that summer, and you thank her for her generous eye and wonder whether she means it.

Mr Pardoe finds you holding the original, which he has kept in a plastic wallet for twenty years. The paper still smells of the radiator under the window. He taps the jaw with a nicotine-yellow finger and says the teeth were always the trouble, that you never decided whether the thing was biting or yawning. You tell him you were trying to draw something that had just swallowed the whole school. The blocks scattered round its body are bus passes, detention slips, a broken set of keys, and it is still hungry for all of them.
He presses a stubby HB pencil into your palm and says finish it, since you are standing in the one room where nobody can make you leave. You sit on a folding chair at the edge of the hall and begin with the loose curl at the bottom. The angular blocks, you notice, have names written faintly inside them in your own sixteen-year-old hand. You shade the one that says Dean Pryce, the lad who took your bike and your confidence in the same term, and the serpent's eye, drawn so long ago it was only a sketch, slowly turns from the wall toward the door.
